Instructor feedback / UPgrading

Please do not delete any assignment from any folder without instructor approval.

Setting the time for your BSCW login

You will want to be sure that your BSCW login is set for the Central Time Zone.  To reset your time, log in to your workspace, click on "Options" near the top of your workspace.  In the drop down list, select "Details."   Here is the page where you can set the time for your login.  You will enter the current time in the local time box, using military time format.    After you make your changes, click on the OK button near the bottom of the screen.

Setting up Netmeeting with your user information - NEW PROCEDURES for 2003-2004
Before you try to make a call in Netmeeting, you need to make sure you are logged onto the Internet and check your user information.

  • Go to the Tools menu and click on "Options" and select the General tab.
  • On the general tab, enter your name (this will appear on the chat screen during meetings).  Since we will not be using email addresses to call each other, you don't need to complete the email address information.
  • In the drop down menu box, your directory may read "Microsoft Internet Directory". You do not need to change the directory, and DO NOT check the box that causes NM to log onto the directory when you start NM.  To avoid unwanted intrusions, we will not be logging onto any directory.  I will send my IP address to students before each meeting, so that they may call my computer directly.  Students who log onto a NetMeeting directory are likely to receive unwanted calls and should never accept a call from an unknown caller.

Instructor Feedback in Your Essay - Opportunity for Revised Grade

1.  I will download your revised essay from BSCW and  insert comments.  Then I will upload the edited file as a  new file. Your grade is not included in the feedback but will be entered into your confidential online grade book.

2.  To see my evaluation of the essay, you simply click on the title to read the new file.  You may need to go to the "View" menu in MSWord and click on "comments" in order to see my comments.

3.  Each student must rewrite each essay.  Please give careful consideration to feedback, and make a bona fide attempt to follow it.  I suggest that you edit the essay version you have on your computer, rather than the feedback version that is full of comments.  If you edit the feedback version, you will need to remove all the comments.  Again: please do not submit a revised essay that still includes my comments.  I will not upgrade a revised essay that includes comments.

4.  Next, you post your final, revised essay in the appropriate revision folder.  Only revisions posted to the revision folder will be upgraded.

5.  IMPORTANT: Please do not delete any files from your essay folder..

Putting a new document in your BSCW folder

GETTING INTO YOUR FOLDER

  1. After opening either Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer (or any other browser), go to class website, listed on your course description, or the class index at www.legacy-arts.net/frames.htm. After you get to the website, add this site to your bookmarks (Netscape) or favorites (Internet Explorer).
  2. When you reach your class website, click on "Go to Shared Workspace"
  3. Use your BSCW user name and password. This is the name and password you gave yourself when you registered with BSCW. This is not necessarily the same as your email address or password.
  4. Open the appropriate folder in the appropriate class. Be sure the folder is open when you begin to upload.

FINDING YOUR FILE to upload

  1. Click on "ADD DOC" in the blue box near the top of your screen.
  2. Click on the "Browse" button.
  3. Change the file type to "All files".
  4. Find your file on your floppy disk or the hard drive of your computer.
  5. Highlight the file you want to put in your workspace.
  6. Click on the "Open" button. The name of your file should now appear in the "Send local file" box. DON’T UPLOAD YET – A FEW MORE DETAILS FIRST!

TELLING THE WORKSPACE ABOUT YOUR FILE

  1. You can change the name of your file by typing a new name in the "Document Name" box, but you don't have to.
  2. You can add a description of your file in the "Description" box, but you don't have to.
  3. Scroll down to see the remaining choices.
  4. You do not need to choose a rating for your document.
  5. VERY IMPORTANT!

  6. Click on the down arrow next to the " MIME-type" box.
  7. Select the type of file you are putting in your workspace folder - probably "MS Word". This information tells my computer what software to use when I open your file.
  8. Ignore the " encoding-type" box.

LAST STEP

Click on "Upload Document". Your document should now appear in your folder, and it should have a picture next to it to indicate that it is a word processed file - probably the blue MSWord icon.  If you document appears with a picture that shows a page with x's and o's, you have forgotten to indicate the MIME (file) type.  Use the options to the right of your file to change the type.

Making sure your browser updates files

You need to set preferences in your browser to make sure it displays the latest, most up-to-date information when you revisit the class website.  Otherwise it will try to get an old copy of the file that it has stored on your hard drive.  It thinks it's helping you speed up your Internet browsing, but it is accidentally giving you old information.

In Netscape 4.6:

On "Edit" menu; select "Preferences" &; select "Advanced"; select "Cache"; Check: "Every time"

In MS Internet Explorer 5:

On "Tools" menu; select "Internet Options"; on "General" tab; select "Temporary Internet files"; select "Settings"; check "Every visit to the page"

Latin 2 and 3 - Test Correction Rules
Optional, but highly recommended.

1. This is an optional upgrade opportunity.  Students will received 1/3 of the originally lost points, to be added to the original test grade.  Though the student works a good bit for a few points, these points can have a large impact on the overall average as the year progresses.
2. This a great learning opportunity.  The richest learning experience occurs when the student has to analyze why he made an error (didn’t memorize the vocabulary, didn’t recognize the 3rd declension noun, etc.), and then must also correct the answer.  No corrections will be accepted without error analysis.
3. If the student corrects his test, he MUST attempt corrections for ALL errors.  No partial corrections will be accepted on tests.
4. Most test corrections must be made on the corrections worksheet, available in the online Legacy Arts Test Bank.  However, sentence translations should be made on a separate sheet and attached to the test correction packet.  For each corrected sentence translation, the student must include a list of analyzed errors on the worksheet.  For true/false questions, student must translate the sentence which includes the answer.
5. I am glad to help!  If a student does not understand his error, or how to correct it, he should send for email help.  He should include the problem number, the exact error made, and a question about how to correct.
6. Test must be returned with the corrections worksheets, with the worksheets stapled on top of the original test.

Finding NetMeeting on your computer

1. Click on the Start Button in your Task Bar.
2. Click on "Search"

4. In the file name box, enter "nm.exe" or "conf.exe" .  Make sure you have chosen to look in your hard drive.
5. If you find the file, you should right click and tell your computer to create a shortcut to the file on your desktop.
